Possible Incorrect Death Counts from Iraq War

It was just a few weeks ago that I was taking an Oracle PL/SQL training course in Colorado Springs, it was there that I first heard of this possible disturbing news. Now I do not know if this is factual, but I do plan on doing some investigation into this to see if what I heard was possible the truth.
My natural mother's husband explained to me that his niece was a nurse in Air Force and soldiers and airmen that were being treated in hospitals outside of the Iraq combat area were not being counted as killed in action. These men and women that were gravely wounded in combat operations and then dying in hospitals like Walter Reed, hospitals in Kuwait, and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center are not considered being added to the number of KIA. Does this sound correct? Can this really be happening?
I am not aware of any D.O.D (Department of Defense) policy that covers this and I maybe totally mistaken on my thinking of this possible problem, but it would seem to me that this was another attempt by our current administration to hide the truth about the war in Iraq and the amount of American service men and women.
I plan on doing some investigation on this to find out if it is true. If so, why is this happening?
I will be adding to this story as I receive more information.
