Iraq: An American Internal Conflict

Back in November of last year Americans went to the polls in droves to oust Republican senators and representatives to speed up withdraw of American troops from Iraq. It seems to me that this has started some sort of seesaw battle between the now democratic controlled house and senate and the Bush administration. “This week, the House plans to vote on a war spending bill that includes a troop withdrawal deadline of Sept. 1, 2008. That time line would speed up if the Iraqi government cannot meet its own benchmarks for providing security, allocating oil revenues and taking other essential steps. Bush has threatened a veto” – from the AP. What good is this bill going to do if it passes in both congress and the senate and Bush veto’s it, this is the seesaw that I was referring to

With the fourth anniversary of the war is upon us, more and more Americans are loosing faith in the Bush administration, some are calling this conflict a total catastrophe. Demonstrations are starting to brew across our country, people coming out in droves to express their disbelief and frustration.

President Bush is supposed to make a plea for more patience to us, while I do not think this will do any good, I am sure it will buy him more time to continue this debacle that he has gotten us into.

Someone please tell me what has gone wrong because; honestly I do not understand why we continue to fight for nothing. Are we fighting terrorism over in Iraq? This is a question that is hard to answer; some will say yes, some will say no. I would have to agree with the side which represents no; we are only trying to stabilize a civil war.

The war in Iraq has been a total disaster and nothing that is done now can correct that, it is beside the point. We cannot bring back the 3,200 American service men and women, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for what I see is a lost cause.

Will Bush listen to the American people? While antiwar demonstrations continue to build, it does not seem so. I know that the news only reports on the bad situations which happen; IED explosions, car bombs, and insurgents, but there are good things that we are accomplishing over there. We are building schools, roads, and many other things, but is it really worth the lives of our young men and women?

Who knows when we will start a troop withdraw; it is a shame that we even started this conflict in the first place. I am sure it will not happen before January 20, 2009, which is a real shame. How many Americans will have to give their lives for nothing?
