contacts with multiple profiles

hi mike
we have folks who start out with us as undergrads and they may be contacts even after they have become professors
i'm wondering how you would approach having a contact in salesforce display a series of profiles (for instance 3 retired as undergrad, phd, msc and a current as faculty)
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

My guess would be to setup custom fields for each profile you want to add to the layout of a page and populate the data that way


Does that make sense?
